Migrating to Johannesburg
The Paul Kruger Street Synagogue was expropriated in 1952 by the Government to erect a new Supreme Court.
Once diamonds were discovered in Kimberly and the gold fields in Witwatersrand started to produce, the population shifted north to Johannesburg. As a people, we played a role in developing trade and industry and at the same time dealt with anti-Semitism and bigotry. While definitely part of the community, Jews were often considered uitlanders ('foreigners') and excluded from the mainstream of South African life.
